YNWP Colloquium (May 2026)
On May 7, The Young Network for Wittgensteinian Philosophy will welcome us, the Ludwig Wittgenstein Project (LWP), for a presentation about the goals and features of our project in comparison with the Wittgenstein Archives at the University of Bergen (WAB). In our talk, titled “Wittgenstein online: the Bergen websites and the Ludwig Wittgenstein Project,” the founder of the LWP, Michele Lavazza, will explain how to best benefit from our work and from that of the WAB, and how you can join our team. (To receive the Zoom link, please sign up for the mailing list provided above.)
Abstract:
Since very early in the digital age, the availability of Wittgenstein’s writings in electronic formats has been exceptionally good. The reason for this is chiefly the efforts of the Wittgenstein Archives at the University of Bergen (WAB), which, through agreements with the copyright holders to the Nachlass and through tireless and intelligent editorial work, scanned and transcribed Wittgenstein’s manuscripts and produced several digital tools to browse them, search them, and read them.
In 2022, the expiry of the 70-year term after Wittgenstein’s death caused his writings to enter the public domain (their copyrights to expire) in many countries around the world. This opened further possibilities for community-driven projects, inspired by the long-lasting success of the Wikimedia movement, to publish web editions of Wittgenstein’s writings. This is what led to the foundation and growth of the Ludwig Wittgenstein Project (LWP), which, in contrast with the WAB, does not focus on the Nachlass, but on Wittgenstein’s writings that were published as books by his literary executors and other editors.
This talk will not present the results of some research; rather, it aims to showcase the main features of both the WAB websites and the LWP website, which are both, in different ways, valuable tools for students and young researchers; it will also offer a brief overview of how the LWP’s community works and describe the ways in which new volunteers may get involved.
